Piñatas

By Savannah McKinnon

Piñatas are a traditional part of the Posadas. In México, the Posadas are a tradition that last from December 16 to December 24. There are huge parties around each neighborhood where the people sing the Posadas song and eat traditional learning about these Posadas by cooking food and making decorations for the party. Another important item is the Piñata, which both classes had foods. In 8th grade Spanish we are to make. It was so challenging trying to get the 7 picos (cones) to stay on the paper maché ball. I know my group had so much to do and our piñatas are incredibly interesting. Nicole's group made an amazing piñata. The piñatas came out pretty cool, and it was an awesome experience to attempt to make them. I understand now that it is a huge tradition and Ms. Paniagua respects it completely. Singing the Posadas song to the High School Spanish class was fun too...

Menlo Speakers

By Paul Wat
Recently we had a few visitors to come to Menlo and talk to the students about many subjects. Dr. Stine came to tell the 6th graders about earthquakes, Craig told us about Free the Children, Dr. Hunt came to talk about his job and discoveries around the world, and recently Dr. Grossman came to talk about robots and machines. Dr. Stine told us all about faultlines spread around California, and how everything that does not make sense now, makes sense if we moves two plates backwards in time, making them make sense again. Dr. Stine helped 6th graders see how fun geology could be, and we all learned a lot from him. Craig, the founder of Free the Children came to tell of his adventures around poor countries and how he helped many of the homeless living on the streets and such. He encouraged us to help these poor children, because they were so helpless. Finally, Craig helped us realize that a bunch of middle school kids can do a lot to help the world; change it. Dr. Hunt came and spoke to the 6th grade about discoveries, informing us of some of the famous discoveries that changed the world’s sense of history. He told us that even we could stumble upon a discovery, and maybe someday we will change history. Finally, today, Dr. Grossman came to talk about the different robots that could help, entertain, and do different things. He talked about what robots were, and what they could do. Dr. Grossman told us about what robots were made for, perhaps making puzzles, or assembling things. Then he showed us all the inventions that people have made to accomplish a certain goal. Finally, he said of the many robots around the world, and its many uses. Menlo has been visited by many speakers, and so far students may be inspired by them, and maybe were helped to get a firm grasp of what they want to do in the future.

110th BIG GAME

Wade Avery
This year the Big Game saw a twist that it has not seen in a while. A Stanford win. The series has been one with many lopsided affairs. Cal has won the last 5 meetings, while Stanford won the last 8 before that. With California coming in a 13 favorite, it looked like both an opportunity for Cal to both continue their series dominance, and give their season a little lift. But Coach Jim Harbaugh had his troops ready to go. Out of the gates, the game was a classic. The Cal side of the stadium (normally holding more Cal than Stanford fans) was rocking. But the Stanford faithful were out and loud, bringing the noise. With everybody fired up with hate, the game got underway. On Cal’s first possession Stanford’s standout linebacker, Clinton Snyder had all 3 Stanford tackles, including the 3rd down sack, forced, and recovered fumble. Stanford senior QB from Atherton, T.C. Ostrander connected with a wide-open Mark Bradford for an easy touchdown. Cal later came back with a connection to open receiver Robert Jordan for a TD. After the end of the half, the Cardinal faithful had lots to cheer about as they went to the locker room with a 13-10 lead. The first score of the second half came with a Stanford drive led by Tavita Prichard. On a play action pass, he rolled out flipping it 10 yards to tight end Austin Gunder in the back of he end zone. Stanford led 20-10. Soon after a Cal field goal the Cardinal lead was only 7. Then, the Stanford defense came through. CB Nick Sanchez had 2 picks in the 4th quarter, making Nate Longshore look like a boy among men. After Levelle Hawkins dropped countless passes in the end zone, Stanford secured a victory 20-13. Stanford took the axe for the first time in 5 years. It was a night celebrated by many a Stanford fan.

NCAAF Awards

Best Cinderella: South Florida
Why? Because they are a good team, they got from unranked to #2 without playing any cupcakes. They had two signature wins, at Auburn (at night where they have lost one game other than this) and West Virginia. You look at Kansas and UConn, neither of those teams have big wins against top programs.
Best Spoiler: Cal
Even an unbias person like me would admit this. This is a joke! You work your way up to #2 and for a few hours #1 with incredible talent, and what do you do? Go from 5-0 to 6-5. You’ve got a Heisman candidate receiver, and team that backs him up that beat the SEC East title (Tennessee) and in you last 7 games you go 1-6. Wow.
Best Team: LSU
Opponents needed a total of 6 OT’s to beat them. They have a dominant defense, with a fabulous offense under pressure. These guys are very good.
Worst Team: The “Fighting” Irish
They won two straight, give them that, against two teams with the combined record of 4-19.
Best Player: Darren McFadden
Against LSU, he took more snaps than Casey Dick (QB). He had 4 TD’s, 1 throwing. He is DOMINANT!!!
Worst Player: Jimmy Clausen
He not only makes freshman mistakes, but mistakes Juniors in high-school make.
Best Game: Stanford vs. USC
Given.
Worst Game (or biggest blowout): Michigan vs. Notre Dame
38-0 (Michigan), with no contest.

BSC and other bowls

Wade Avery
My Picks:

Rose Bowl: Illinois vs. USC
USC 23 Illinois 14

Sugar Bowl: Georgia vs. Hawaii
Georgia 38 Hawaii 17

Orange Bowl: Kansas vs. Virginia Tech
Kansas 14 Virginia Tech 7

Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma vs. West Virginia
Oklahoma 31 West Virginia 24

BCS Championship: LSU vs. Ohio State
LSU 28 Ohio State 10

Other Good match-ups:
Liberty Bowl: Miss. State vs. UCF
Sounds like a blowout. But UCF has the nations leading statistical running back, Kevin Smith who could take over.

Cotton Bowl: Auburn vs. Missouri
Very explosive.

Sun Bowl: Oregon vs. South Florida
Two talented drop offs.

Enchanted: A soon to be Princess is pushed into the real world and is faced with all its challenges. Her Prince follows her along with his sidekick Pip. He trys to rescue her from the evil witch. I give this movie a ten out of ten.
August Rush: An orphaned boy wanders throughout new york city searching to “follow the music” in hopes to bring his lost parents together. Along the way he meets many people that help him reach his full potential as a musician. I give this an eight out of ten.

MUSIC REVIEW

By Kate Huneke
Kids from kindergarden from eighth grade (and higher) have all gone to the Hannah Montana Tour. She is the new biggest thing amoung us.
Hannah (really Miley Cyrus) celebrated her fifteenth birthday with the Jonas Brothers on her tour bus. Doesn’t sound too fun to have your birthday on a bus? Guess again! She said they had a big suprise part—the JoBros decorated her bus with lots of tinsel and twinkly lights!
Rumors have been flying around that Miley and Nick Jonas (the youngest in the band) have been going out—that must have been a cool birthday suprise for her!
But while not having parties, Miley was working hard on the stage. She performed a on of songs at her many concerts—and did it well! She has topped the charts for a while now, but nobody’s getting tired of her.
