NFL 2008
Sleepers. That word has been spoken many times since the beginning of the 2008 NFL season. Some teams, such as the Seahawks, the Browns, and the Chargers, started as projected powerhouses have slipped down to 0-2. Some players, like Steven Jackson who has had 93 three yards and no TDs in his first two games and Carson Palmer who’s had no TD passes and 3 interceptions so far this season, just haven’t done anything. Also, there have been some surprising players, like DeSean Jackson and Michael Turner who had 226 yards and 3 TDs his first game of the season, who have unexpectedly done well. There have been some teams that have jumped off to a surprising 2-0 start, like the Denver Broncos who have been led by their quarterback, Jay Cutler, past the Raiders and the Chargers. From sleepers to surprisers, the NFL season has gotten to a crazy start.
Welcome Back Menlo 2008-09

Welcome again to a new year of school here at Menlo. Welcome to all the 6th graders who may still be a bit confused around, but know that eventually you will get used to Menlo. Welcome back to the 7th and 8th graders who have enjoyed a long relaxing summer away from school. But now everyone is back, and we are all feeling great. The homework load is coming on, while starting at a pretty quick pace as we zoom into school mode. Everyone is feeling more then just excited or sad now that were back at Menlo, but also maybe anxious for a great start, or maybe just tired from the whole feeling of school. Anyways, we hope that everyone will have a great time this year at Menlo and good luck to the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders!!!

A Day in Life as a 6th Grader
By Millicent Golding and Elaine Shen, Contributing Writers
I wake up to the screaming alarm and think to myself: Two weeks ago I was still relaxing on summer vacation and now, I am waking up at 6:00 every morning for the rest of the school year.
I arrive at school and drag my backpack to my locker and rush to class as the bell rings. I stare at the white board and then begin to record tonight’s homework. Then the teacher starts to teach. We learn about everything from science to humanities.
Now, it is time for lunch. My friends and I rush to the cafeteria before 7th and 8th graders arrive. We sit down and eat and chat about our school day. Then I finish up my lunch and begin walking to the bookstore. I buy a Menlo sweatshirt and make my way over to my activity. Today I am going to clubs. I decide to go to the computer lab. The computer lab is often a very full club.
I make my way over to my sport, softball. I begin to warm up with a couple of stretches and then start hitting some softballs. I run around all over the place on the hot sunny day. I drink lots and lots of water and start walking over to my drama class. Drama is the perfect class to have after softball because I can relax and play fun drama games.
My last class of the day is Latin. We practice our Latin, read in our textbooks, and work in our workbooks on what we are learning about. When the bell rings I walk to my locker. I put all the books I need for homework in my backpack, close my locker and head downstairs. I go out to the circular lot and look for my parents’ car. I see my mom in the car and jump in. I had a great day, and can’t wait for tomorrow.

The Big Day is on the Way

Obama vs. McCain, Democrat vs. Republican, donkey vs. elephant. Each candidate and their parties have strong views on how America should live. There are certain issues, national and worldwide, which will affect the winner of the presidential race. Although you might not believe it now, you make and influence on the election because the candidates care what the youth of America thinks. Maybe you don’t read the newspaper daily, so you can be informed on the hot topics for this year’s election.
WAR IN IRAQ - Currently 4,000 of the 160,000 American soldiers have died while fighting, and the over 600 billion dollars we have already spent on the war which has dramatically increased the national deficit. McCain supports Bush in his decision to invade Iraq in 2002, and send even more of thousands of soldiers in 2007. Obama has been opposed to the war since the beginning, and would immediately begin the process of sending troops back home and settling the differences between the Iraq and the U.S.
THE ENVIROMENT - The U.S is accountable for one fourth of the green house gas emissions in that is released into the air. Obama suggests cutting down carbon dioxide emissions through a system that would make big companies pay for the CO that they produce. He also proposes to invest $150 billion dollars into clear energy technology and reduce oil use by almost 40 percent by 2030. McCain has planned to end the U.S. reliance on foreign oil and begin a global effort to keep pollution from developing in other countries.
THE ECONOMY - the American economy is looking miserable. Housing prices have fallen quickly, jobs are being lost, and food and gas prices are through the roof. McCain’s economic plans mostly benefit big businesses and successful and wealthy homes. He’d cut corporate taxes and provide tax breaks for homes that draw in incomes over 250,000 a year. He’d also lower the taxes for middle class families by starting the Alternative Minimum Tax, saving families almost $60 billion dollars a year. Obama would repeal tax cuts for the upper class and raise capital gain taxes. He would also save an estimated $80 billion for middle class homes and eliminate taxes for seniors who make less than $50,000 dollars a year.
The big question for the youth of America is who would be a better choice to help out you, your family, and your country? If you have strong opinions over the debatable issues that are being faced; talk to your parents or older siblings who can vote, and tell them your opinions on the candidates.

Fall is nearing which means moving away from shorts and tanks and into jeans and jackets-here’s what’s new and hot. Seventies inspired high waist, wide legged jeans are making a big comeback. You can mix trends by making bright colored jeans, or accessorize with a neutral toned belt. Prep is always a must, whether it’s a simple blue blazer or a printed Lily Pulitzer polo, preppy is a timeless and classy look. Hair wear-stretchy straps, big sparkly headbands, or little-girl bows, head wear is always cute, prim, and proper. Tomboy jeans are in, whether they’re original, the boyfriend, or the always hot skinny, people always like to have choices. Punk clothing is creative and hard to find, so the brighter you go the more you hit the nail. Plaid peacoats, lumberjack coats, and pants are new and rebellious, using old fashion to make new statements.
