Previous Duke Assistant Coach, Johnny Dawkins, has been announced as Stanford’s new head basketball coach after Trent Johnson left the university’s basketball program for LSU to coach fine student athletes. As far as most people are concerned he is a good pick up after being under the famous Coach K for over 10 years. Dawkins also played at Duke and held the scoring record at the university for points scored for 20 years until last year. This guy knows his stuff. Bob Bowlsby has given him a six-year contract in hopes that he can continue to improve the Cardinal program.
My Ride for Free the Children
By Sarah Samuels, Contributing Writer
Last weekend I did a bike race called Sea Otter in Monterey for free the children. Even though it didn’t work out as I had planned (due to 35 mph winds) I still had a really good time riding. Altogether I raised $1,150.00 for Free the Children. I really recommend doing this ride. If you do, bring a sweater.

Unlikely Challenges in NBA Playoffs
By Wade Avery, Senior Editor
The NBA playoffs, especially in the Eastern Conference, have been full of unexpected challengers for the top teams. For example the favorite to take it all, the Celtics, are tied at 2-2 in their series with the weak Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks recently swept the Celtics at home with a pair of handy wins in front of a home crowd. The Celtics have recently shown no contest to Al Horford and Joe Johnson. Then there are the Pistons who have been put to work by the wimpy 76ers. That series is tied as well after Philly put on a show in front of their home crowd. Yet in the Western Conference neither of the top teams (Lakers and Spurs) have had any trouble with their opponents after Los Angeles swept the Nuggets and San Antonio has not had any trouble with Phoenix giving up only one win yet.

The Quarterback Draft
By Wyatt Driscoll, Staff Writer
Two out of the last three drafts, quarterbacks were the number one pick. Alex Smith of the 49ers was one, and right now the pick looks like it was a complete bust. the Raiders Jamarcus Russell we haven’t really seen play that much. Then there was Mario Williams who is a defensive end for the Texans. Everyone including me thought it was the dumbest pick ever, but now in his second season he had 13 sacks and still gets no credit. I guess he should be a quarterback. This season the Dolphins have the first pick in the draft. They’re projected to pick Matt Ryan the quarterback from Boston College. I wonder how he’ll turn out. I’m not saying all quarterbacks taken number one are bad, Peyton Manning isn’t, he’s one of the best ever. But could you imagine that Tom Brady almost wasn’t picked. Look how he’s turned out. Brett Farve too was picked late in the draft. I guess it’s just how you pick and look at the each individual player. I guess the Patriots picked right.

Giants Update and Baseball Analysis
By James Huber, Senior Staff Writer
The Giants, as expected, are at the bottom of the NL West with a record of 8-11. Even though the Gigantes are in last place, they are only one game behind the lowly Los Angeles Dodgers and aren’t playing as bad as the experts believed they would be.
The brightest spot for the Giants this year has been the key contributions from Giants rookies. OF John Bowker leads the team with 3 home runs and OFs Eugenio Velez and Fred Lewis always add a spark to the Giants offense because of their raw speed. The new Giants centerfielder that the Giants signed in the off-season for $60 million has hit very well. 2nd year flamethrower Tim Lincecum is 3-0 and has easily been the best pitcher for the Giants this year.
Even though there are bright spots for the Giants so far this year, there have been far more negatives. Injuries to their starting 2B, Kevin Frandsen, has him out for the entire year and Omar Vizquel, the starting SS, hasn’t played in a single game yet. The Giants #1 pitcher, who is one of the highest paid pitchers in baseball, is 0-3. Matt Cain, who I thought would be doing better, is 1-3 and has a 6.64 ERA. Giants veteran hitters who were expected to help carry the offensive load this year, Bengie Molina, Ray Durham and Randy Winn are all hitting under .280.
The Giants can’t count on their young hitters and Aaron Rowand to continue to be the main offense for them and Barry Zito has to start to pitch as well as his contract indicates and Matt Cain needs to pick up his game as well.

Spring Activities
By Kate Huneke, Staff Writer
It’s officially spring, and now we have the weather to do the fun activities that we have been craving all fall and winter long. Almost every town or city in the Bay Area has fun places where you can go to hang out on the weekends.
If you live in Menlo Park, every Sunday they have a farmer’s market, where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, and crunchy caramelized popcorn. It gets pretty hot, so you could cool off and go to the Menlo Circus Club, where you could buy drinks and take a dip in the pool.
If you live more south, such as San Jose, there is another farmer’s market in a town called Los Gatos. There they have different choices, such as French crepes, and delicious toast and jelly. You could buy just-cut flowers of which all different colors and names. Also, Los Gatos has a lovely downtown, of which is pleasing to varied types of people. They have fashion, art, music, technology, business, and entertainment.
Despite the love of the small-town feel, if you are looking for fun and a treat, you could drive a bit of a ways down to Santa Cruz, a well-known beach town. I always enjoy Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. There they have all kinds of rides, and right in front of it is an appealing view of the beach. Many surfers like to ride there, so you could watch them do their tricks. Sometimes on weekends, they have performers, such as cheerleaders, dancers, or magic shows.
If any of these sound appealing and enjoyable, go check it out online, or just go to which one sounds the best to you!

Scientists Convert Waste Products into Clothes
By Clarissa Klein, Staff Writer
Do you know what your clothes go through before you wear them? Probably not. Most materials are either produced in laboratories, or grown full of pesticides. Lots of the clothes in stores are made this way.
But now, there are green companies that make clothes out of bamboo (a plant that grows very well without chemicals) and soybeans. These clothes are a lot more comfortable and are helping our enviroment.
If you lived on a farm, and had bins of chicken feathers, cornhusks, and rice stalks, what would you do? Most people would toss them in the trash, making them a huge waste problem. Scientist Yiqi Yang recently discovered how to turn this trash into fabrics.
These new “agricultural clothes” will not be in stores for many years, because there is much more research needed to study what they can make. Recently discovered was the fact that the chicken feather clothing will wear sort of like wool. This means we can use less sheep, not harm them, and cut down on our meat supply. Even though they aren’t selling chicken clothes, you can still make a difference with what you wear.

Support Our Soldiers Community Service
By Paul Wat, Staff Writer
Last week the 8th graders had a community service day, based on Supporting our Soldiers. They packaged donations of food, toys, candy etc. These would be sent to the soldiers in Iraq. That day, the soldiers came and were joyed to see that they were not alone, especially because Menlo School, which compared to the world is tiny, could make such a big effort to donate. “It was fun to be helping people’” says Kenny Serrano. “I believe it was a good idea.” Packaging wasn’t the only thing the 8th graders did. They wrote letters, made bookmarks, and other things that showed the soldiers good will.
“It was wonderful to see all the 8th graders working together towards one goal and I thought the project was benefiting both for our school-building community service together, as well as reaching out to members of our country abroad. I liked seeing how eight graders were excited to package different items into different boxes and put care into certain ones. I liked that we stayed on campus and the day felt very relaxed, but also productive. I thought it was powerful for the soldiers to come and talk to the students because it made the experience of the soldiers more realistic and humane. I cant believe we packaged over 500 boxes and that the number of items people donated was overwhelming. I am very proud to work at Menlo where people care so deeply about situations outside our community.” Says Mrs. Martin. According to these people, the community service day was affective, caring, and moving.

New cures soon to be discovered!
By Clarissa Klein, Staff Writer
The American alligators commonly have large and nasty battles for territory and mates. It leads to many severe wounds. Scientists in Louisiana wondered why the alligator’s wounds are so resistant to infections. The secret, they discovered, lies in the animal’s blood.
After much experimenting, they discovered that alligator blood could successfully destroy 23 strains of bacteria, including some that are resistant to antibiotics. The blood can also destroy a large amount of HIV, the commonly known virus that causes AIDS. Lancia Darville of Louisiana State University believes that the diseases are broken down by bits of protein in the alligator’s blood. These bits of protein are also found in other reptiles, such as komodo dragons, frogs, toads, and other alligators. Once the scientists figure out the protein’s structure, they can use them as a base for new medicines and cures!
However, this is not a one sided issue. To do the necessary experimenting, the scientists would probably have to obtain a lot of alligator blood. This would involve either removing dead animals from the habitat, or killing a few, and then removing them. When dead, the proteins may collapse, so the scientists may not be able to use already dead animals. I believe that the factor of animal cruelty involved may not make this experiment worthwhile.

Memphis' Old Habits Bring Them Down
By James Huber, Senior Staff Writer
In the national championship game Kansas pulled off a comeback mostly due to Memphis flaws. Some of the problems that had haunted Memphis earlier in the year came back to haunt them when they would have least liked. One of these was their terrible free throw shooting, when they allowed Kansas right back the in the game by missing 4/5 free throws in the final 30 seconds. Then Joey Dorsey, who had been a key for Memphis, fouled out leaving Memphis struggling to get rebounds. Up by 9 with 2 minutes, they missed almost all their shots giving Kansas chances to put themselves in it. Then, off of a Derrick Rose missed free throw with 10.8 seconds left, leading to Russell Robinson to get the ball and bring it up. As he drove he began to slip and fall, dumping it off to Mario Chalmers the Alaska native. Chalmers took a couple dribbles to the top of the key and drilled a 3 with 2 seconds left. Then, without Dorsey in OT, Memphis had no way to stop the Jayhawk players from driving and kicking to score. In the end, the Jayhawks pulled off the win over Memphis 75-68. The win would have been huge for the struggling city of Memphis, but Coach Caliparri of the Tigers said what he was thinking when Rose was on the line with 10.8 seconds, “If he makes this and we win, god meant it to be. If he misses and we lose, it was meant to be.” Still, many fingers have been pointed at Coach Cal for flaws in the last 3 minutes of the game. But over all, the Jayhawks earned their win by not giving up and fighting to the end. This on the 20th anniversary of Kansas’s last NCAA championship. This game was also easily the most entertaining Championship game in 5 years, the last 5 wins were all lopsided wins.

3rd Quarter Fine Arts
By Puji Anur and Brooke Bullington, Staff Writers
Last week Menlo School showed of their talents from fine arts. The sixth and seventh grade classes performed drama, art, and music. The sixth grade music class sang multiple songs, with many solos by the rising singers. Ms. Cirone played the piano during this piece. Then, they performed a hilarious skit, their own rendition of the Frog Prince. Adding a twist by creating a few songs, the 6th graders really showed all they had learned in music this quarter. The new way of showing art at the fine arts assembly is a much more efficient and students are given more time to appreciate the artwork. A few students introduced the styles of art they had worked on, and then during lunch the masterpieces were displayed for Menlo School to admire. The 7th grade public speaking was a truly new and unique experience. Drama had been changed this year to 7th grade public speaking. The students made 30 second speeches about topics of their choice. The topics spoken about were a variety of movies, cafeteria, and sports reviews. This portion of he assembly was set up like a newsroom, and the idea was to enthrall the audience in the presentation. Also, human skills performed a few of their power points which educated the school on the effects of drugs. Overall, it was great performance put on by 6th and 7th grade. It showed how talented Menlo School students are!

Menlo Tennis Update
By Samantha Hoag and Kendyl Denenberg, Staff Writers
Menlo gold had their first match last week against St. Joes. After a struggling effort by St. Joe’s number 1 player, it was Andrew Ball who pulled through 8-1. Three of our four singles came out with a victory, and almost all of our doubles did as well. In the end it was Menlo who won.
Our second match against Hllview A, was a struggle. With our number one player absent our number two Pierre Germa stepped up to the plate and did fantastic job but unfortunatly lost in an intense tiebreaker. Our number three Saga Shermis also stepped up and took over number two in which she did a great job winning in a tiebreaker. With a lot of our player absent unfortunately, in the end we came up short with a devastating 5-4 loss. But Hillview should watch out because they will see us again in the playoffs and this time we will be at full force.

Free iTunes?
By Kate Huneke, Staff Writer
Recently Apple Inc. has been conversing with papers that they might upgrade free iTunes to customers who pay more for an iPod or iPhone.
The Cupertino technology company is struggling to convince, but the conciliation depends on how Apple and the music companies would divide the proceeds.
If the plan materializes, Apple could produce a first-rate check from iPod and iPhone buyers in trade for unlimited songs on free iTunes.
Apple is also studying a plan, according to the papers, to allow iPhone holders, who are already billed monthly for their cell phone charges, to pay a regular in exchange for unlimited access to it’s library, an understanding that Steve Jobs has scoffed in the past.

UCLA Scandal

Referees Paid!!! No, just kidding. But I would like to think that. Thursday night, the Cardinal of Stanford visited Pauly Pavilion to take on the #3 UCLA Bruins. After being up by 12 at the half, the Cardinal just had to hold off the charging Bruins for one more half. That was where things got UGLY! UCLA shot over 50% for the second half making the once enormous Stanford lead get shaved down to a two point lead. With less than a minute to go UCLA tied it. Then with 7 seconds left Laurence Hill hit a jumper to give the Card a 2 point lead. The Bruins then gave the ball up the court to Shipp who drove at Hill and tried to lay it up. While Shipp went up with the ball still in his hand, Hill blocked the shot, nearly palming the ball to what seemed to be the winning block. But the referee, called a foul on Hill even though he clearly had got all ball. Stanford went on to loose in OT. The very next day against Cal, down by one, the Bruins had to defend a Cal inbounds play. Ryan Anderson of Cal got the ball and was clearly hacked by not one, but two UCLA players. This caused Anderson to loose the ball out of bounds and turn the ball back over to UCLA. As if that wasn’t enough, the very next play Shipp got the ball dribbled up the sidelines and shot the ball over the backboard and in. This is an illegal play, but again the same refs were calling the game and said the ball went over the “corner” of the backboard and that it counted. This led to uproars across the Pac-10, especially in Northern California. But UCLA fans call this team the destined team, after heroically “beating” Stanford and Cal.

Sports at Menlo
By Paul Wat, Staff Writer
The main effective source of exercise is gained from P.E., where a variety of sports are given as choices to the students to teach them about that sport. Through all the seasons, the sports have been changing while some are still being hosted by our energetic coaches. Some sports include:
Tennis
Water Polo
Track
Baseball
Soccer
Dance
Swimming
Basketball
Students are allowed to enroll in any of the sports available, and at the end of the season, we are allowed to change or stay with our sport. Menlo allows us to try out many different sports in one year, and encourages us to try different things.
These sports, although very different, are all similar in a way that they entertain the students and pushes the participants to do their best, and encourages them to work out and stay physically fit. Sports work on teamwork between the players, and help to improve the team’s respect of one another, training them to appreciate his/her teammates. P.E. is a way for the students to be entertained, to stay healthy, and most importantly, to HAVE FUN.

MLB: More Opening Day Upsets
By Wyatt Driscoll, Contributing Writer
Editor's Note: Wyatt continues his features on upsets in sports, this time in Major League Baseball.
Three of the worst teams from the year before won on Monday the 31st. On opening day the Nationals, a second to last place team a year before, beat the Braves on a Ryan Zimmerman walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth off John Rauch. The Tampa Bay Rays won for the first time in seven years on an away game that was on opening day, beating the Orioles who had Cal Ripken in attendance 6 to 2. The horrible Royals somehow beat the terrific Tigers in 11 innings. The Tigers who many people are picking to win the world series have nine batters in their order who can all bat .300. The Royals did end up winning. There was good news for both the Tigers and the Royals. Miguel Cabrera hit his first home run as a Tiger. Alex Gordon who had a horrible rookie year hit a home run on opening day for the Royals.

Final Four Preview
By James Huber, Senior Staff Writer
North Carolina: In a survey taken by Espn.com, around 46% of people polled believed that North Carolina had the best chance of all the Final Four teams to win the NCAA Championship. UNC is led by big man Tyler Hansborough who has been a beast in the tournament so far. No one has been able to stop the combination of Hansborough, point guard Ty Lawson and Danny Green’s offense from off the bench. The tarheels have looked the strongest of all the Final Four teams, winning all their games by at least double digit points.
Kansas: To me, Kansas is the weakest of all the Final Four teams. They have a very deep lineup and tons of talent, but no go to scorer on their team that they can count on in crunch time. Brandon Rush, Mario Chalmers, and Darnell Jackson lead the team.
Memphis: The team that I have winning it all, (and I have all the final fours correct in my bracket) is led by the fab freshman PG Derrick Rose. Their leading scoring is shooting guard Chris Douglas-Roberts and Joey Dorsey provides stellar defense in the paint. Rose has shown incredible poise the entire year and outplayed teammate Roberts and opposing PG D.J. Augustin in their elite eight win over Texas.
UCLA: Another favorite besides UNC to win it all, UCLA is powered by freshman center Kevin Love and speedy PG Darren Collison. No team in the tournament so far has been able to contain either. Russel Westbrook is the team’s best defender and was the Pac-10 defensive player of the year. Mbah a Moute and Josh Shipp also are key players and UCLA is another very deep and talented team.

Lopez Legacy

Two years ago, two twins were seen on the Stanford campus for the first time. Many people recognized them from the McDonalds All-American High School game where they were seen by the entire nation for the first time. When the Stanford nation saw these twins appear from the tunnel on the first game of the year, they witnessed 14 feet of man. These were the Lopez twins. At first we only saw Robin, or as many called him the one with the Afro, play because Brook was fresh off an injury. After watching Robin own people, it was a sign of what was to come. Just a year later, these twins have earned all Pac-10 honors. They have carried Stanford to victories all season. They came through in the clutch and to our surprise even the most consistent free throw shooter. Many have declared these Lopezs to be the greatest players to ever suit up for Stanford. Now, both have declared the draft and the unbelievable twin, Brook, is projected to go as the #3 pick overall and Robin is shown in the late 1st early 2nd round. Stanford fans applaud them for their help to us and leading our program to the Sweet 16. No, we won’t threaten them to come back like other programs, but we respect them and love what they have done for us. There will never be another Brook and Robin Lopez ever, they simply cannot be matched.

The New George Mason -- Almost

Who’s ever heard of Davidson College? Well, after this year’s NCAA Tournament, many more people have. The Underdogs this year, the Davidson Wildcats, made a great run for it this year but slightly missed the Final Four. They were led by their three-point sharpshooter, Stephen Curry, who played amazingly well throughout the whole tournament. In their first round game they played the 7 seed Gonzaga and won 82 to 76 led by Stephen Curry who put up 40 points. Their second round game they played Roy Hibbert and the Georgetown Hoyas and won 74 to 70 with Stephen Curry putting up 30 points. In their third round game it didn’t get much easier as they played the Wisconsin Badgers. They dominated this game and won 73 to 56 with the help of Stephen Curry’s 33 points. In Davidson’s Elite Eight Game they had to play the one seeded Kansas Jayhawks. This was a really close game with Kansas coming out on top 59 to 57 when Jason Richards missed a last second 3 pointer. Overall this year’s Davidson Wildcats went from unknown to famous.
