Book Title: Virus on Orbis 1
Author: PJ Haarsma
Virus on Orbis 1 is a sci-fi book about a boy named Johnny Turnbull. After spending his entire life on a space ship called the Renaissance, he arrives on the rings of Orbis, only to find out he will be a slave there for four years. Shortly afterwards, however, he discovers he is a softwire, a person with the ability to send their minds into computers. But when the central computer that is responsible for performing tasks starts to make mistakes, a phenomenon that hasn’t happened in hundreds of thousands of years, Johnny is immediately blamed. Can Johnny prove his innocence and find the culprit? Find out! I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read with lots of action.

Opening Day in Washington
By Wyatt Driscoll, Contributing Writer
On the opening game for the Braves and Nationals their game came to an exciting ending. The Nationals in their new ballpark started off great. In the 1st inning they scored two runs off the Braves ace Tim Hudson. For about three innings the game was scoreless until Chipper Jones of the Braves a tenured veteran hit the first home run in the Nationals Park History. That isn’t the one everyone’s going to remember though. Tim Hudson pitched a great game going 19 consecutive hitters without a hit. In the top off the ninth Paul Lo Duca let a wild pitch get by him tying the game for the Braves. Then in the Bottom of the Ninth with two outs Ryan Zimmerman the face of the Nats franchise hit a walkoff solo shot that ended the game.

Tampa is the New Upset City
By Wyatt Driscoll, Contributing Writer
In the first round of the men’s NCAA tournament, Tampa, Florida became the new upset city. Number 12 seed Western Kentucky knocked off #5 Drake on desperation shot in the ending seconds in overtime. Rogers with 5.6 seconds left hit a 26 ft. jumper to defeat Drake.
San Diego took the second upset of the day beating Uconn. Who had not lost in the first round of the tourney since 1979. The Toreros going into overtime had a ton of confidence. Then as the waiting seconds on the clock were ticking off De’jon Jackson hit the game winning shot with 1.2 seconds left.
The third upset of the day was between number 4 ranked Vanderbilt and #13 ranked Siena. Siena was wearing the same colors as George Mason was wearing when they made it to the final four. This one was not like the other two that went into overtime. This game was a blowout!!! Vandy from the opening tip did not lead. The leading scorer for the winning team Siena was Kenny Hasbrouck scored 30 points in the win for Siena.
In the night game Clemson who most people had going far lost to the #12 seeded Villanova Wildcats. The Wildcats were led by their talented sophomore Scotty Reynolds, who had 21 in the win. AJ Price Uconn’s point guard left in the first half with a torn ACL, he was probably their best player. The final score in the last upset of the day was Villanova 75-69.

6th Boys Soccer Goes Undefeated

We had a killer sixth grade soccer team this year. We had high hopes for our team ever since our first practice. We easily went undefeated during the season winning by an average of 3 goals. Our team was led by our amazing center midfielder, Ben Garfinkel, and our key defender, Wyatt Driscoll. Our All American First Team Goalkeeper Colin Johnson was strong in every game. Our key backup goalie was Efe Sarinalbant who let 0 goals in during the whole season. He averaged playing about one fourth of the game at goalkeeper. We had some very strong backup defenders such as Hidehiro Anto and Hunter Brown who played solidly every single game. Our last game of the season the scoring was spread out when we won 6 to 0 against the Pinewood Panthers. Overall we had great soccer season this year.

6th Grade Girls Win Basketball Championship

From the beginning of the season we started off not playing as a team. After playing with Coach King, we started to mesh and play aggressively. In our first couple of games we scored up in the twenties-thirties consistently. Then came the nail biting game against St. Simons. At the end of the game the final score was 24-23 St. Simons. We had a feeling we would play them in the final tournament and we were ready to defeat them, but St. Joes beat St. Simons 20-7. After we beat Castilleja in the semi-finals 23-19, we were heading off to the Championships!! There we played the final game against St. Joes. We were ready all sitting on the bench listening to another of King’s final pep talks. “This is it.” He kept repeating and it was true. We all jumped up and down when the final buzzer went off. We had WON the CHAMPIONSHIPS 25-10. We were all so excited. Over all we had a great season thanks to Coach King and Coach Bibi.

Teams That Can Beat UNC
By Wyatt Driscoll, Contributing Writer
UCLA has a shot a beating UNC because of there multiple big men and fast running offense. UCLA is one of two teams to rank in the top five in defensive and offensive efficiency. They take control of the game by forcing you into silly turnovers and then scoring on the other end. Along with excellent inside and outside shooting. If UCLA makes it that far they can beat UNC because of their great defense.
Duke is another team that could cause problems for UNC because of their 3-point shooting. It depends though if they make their 3’s. If they make their 3s they’ll have a shot against UNC. The only problem is that they don’t have a big man that could handle Hansborough. Singler and Zoubek are good big men but couldn’t take Tyler on one on one. Duke did do a good job of double and even triple teaming Tyler when he had the ball in the post. Spreading the floor would draw Hansborough away from the basket. Which could leave opening for Demarcus Nelson or Greg Paulus to drive to the hoop. Duke because of their personnel can beat UNC and just because the rivalry is so intense.
Tennessee like Duke is an excellent three point shooting team. Lead by the fabulous senior Chris Lofton they would spread the floor and shoot a lot of 3’s. Just like Duke they lack an inside presence. They are a much faster team then duke though and can finish at the hoop. They shoot a very high percentage; they’re in the top five in the nation. Everyone can handle the ball and be the point guard. They could run the floor against UNC and make it a fast pace which would give UNC problems.
The team out of these three that could really beat UNC would probably be UCLA. Because of their multiple big men they would wear Hansborough out. UNC is the best team overall though and will probably make it too the final four.

The Method to the Madness

When March rolls around and colleges begin preparing for the NCAA tournament fans true spirit come out. They root hard for their team and in their brackets they have their favorite college winning it all even if they are a 12 seed. But once their alma mater gets knocked out on a “bad call” or a “lucky shot” they have to have a back up team. People then start rooting for the underdog. All fans want another feel good story of the number 11 seed 2006 George Mason Patriots. This team made it all the way to the final four knocking off number 1, and favored to win, Connecticut Huskies. With the deep field in the 2008 tournament I believe that there will be no cinderella and an all 1st seed final four with a 2 or 3 seed slipping.

For the first time in WCC history, three teams from a normally one bid conference, are going to the NCAA tournament. Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga got at large bids with very respectable schedules. But in the conference tournament San Diego beat both of those teams in two huge upsets to get a bid for them selves. Then the Pac-10 had 6 teams get bids. This was no surprise to most people, but the only surprise was Arizona State getting shut out despite dominating 3 seeds Xavier and Stanford as well as Arizona twice. With the additions of Portland State, Boise State, and Cal State Fullerton winning their conferences, it adds up to 12 west coast teams making the tournament.

Fantasy Baseball Position Primer
By Jake Rachleff, Contributing Writer
Pitcher: Although Johan Santana is the highest rated pitcher, he is coming off his worst season. He had 15 wins, over 200 innings pitched and a 3.33 ERA. This is his worst year since 2001. Last year, he went 19-6, with 245 strikeouts and pitched 233 innings. That was one of two cy young seasons for the future hall of famer. He is switching into the NL, where there are much worse hitters. In the past 7 seasons, the ERA of pitchers switching into the NL has dropped .85 percentage points. He is also in a league with the Nationals and Marlins, both weak lineups.
Outfield: Carl Crawford is a perfect fantasy player. He averages over 50 steals a year and gets around 15 home runs. His average has risen every year, last year at 315. If he continues this trend, he will have an average around 320 and get around 200 hits. His doubles rose dramatically last year. Crawford always has a great year, and if you have a league that counts triples and doubles, he is an outstanding pick. Don’t take him before the 10th pick though, because he is not yet a power hitter, but he has capability. His athletic ability is outstanding, as baseball wasn’t even his best sport. He played basketball and football in high school.
Corner infielder: Miguel Cabrera is just waiting to have a 40 homerun year. He had over 30 homers last year and over 110 RBIs. He came into spring training in better shape, weighing fifteen pounds less. He is not at his prime yet, as he came into the big leagues as a young kid. He always is in the top five in batting average and has a great lineup in front of him. That will lead to fantastic run production.
Middle Infield: Hanley Ramirez is the up and coming star in the new crop of shortstops. He combines speed, power and average. He hit 29 homeruns and 81 rbis as a leadoff hitter. Hanley had 51 steals and was caught only 14 times, which is a good percentage. If your fantasy league likes steals and homers, this is definitely your type of player. He is the best shortstop in the MLB (since A-Rod plays 3B) His 212 hits are not too shabby either. In fantasy sports, the four main categories are hits, rbis, homers and steals. Hanley is great in each of those categories, especially for a leadoff hitter.
Catcher: Russell Martin had 21 steals, 19 homers and 87 homers. Do I need to say anything more?

Audiences Enjoy Romeo and Juliet
By Malia Bates, Contributing Writer
Last weekend the Menlo School Drama club put together a wonderful play of Romeo and Juliet. The cast consisted of a mix of 6th, 7th and 8th graders, and they all did a wonderful job. The stage looked amazing and so did the background. The play started off with the Montagues and the Capulets at the funeral of Romeo and Juliet, and then the priest starts to tell the life of Romeo and Juliet.
Juliet played by Marjory Marquart and Romeo played Andrew Sanford did a fantastic job! They both are really great actors. Even when Mr. Mugglebee had to step in the play went on!

Menlo Dance Concert
By Kate Huneke, Staff Writer
Although the Dance Concert features mostly high school students, some of the Menlo Middle School students performed in it. The eight graders performed a hip-hop/jazz dance to “Fuego” by Pit Bull, the seventh graders had a jazz dance to “Who Knew” by Pink, and the sixth grade had two dances; one to “Rock star” by Prima J, and the other to “Build Me Up Buttercup”.
The audience cheered for everybody, and every single show was sold out. The dancers had four performances—one on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and a matinee (afternoon performances) on Sunday. If you came, thank you, and we hope you enjoyed every second of it!

Can't Touch This
By Alex Menell, Contributing Writer
This past Sunday we had a special guest at the Menlo Dance Show. M.C. Hammer, writer of the song “Can’t Touch This,” showed up to watch all of the amazing dances. He broke out laughing when Kerry Fier did the “Hammer Dance.” He stayed for a while afterward to congratulate the dancers, signed some autographs, and even took a few pictures. He is going to buy the DVD of the show, separate the dances, and put them on his new website, www.Dancejam.com. If you didn’t get a chance to see the show make sure to look on his website to see all of the dances.

Halftime Entertainment Warriors Style
By Hannah Lambing, Contributing Writer
Last week, I had the opportunity to dance with the Kirkpatrick’s Dance Team at half time at the Warrior’s game. It was a thrill, an excitement... a pure pleasure. I had a shiver of chill: I was the tiniest bit nervous. Of course, it was a bit freaky to be sitting in the Warrior’s stadium, anxiously gazing at the wound up crowd knowing that soon, they would be staring at me dancing. When the time finally came that we had to meet up with the rest of the team, I was getting really excited. I could not wait just to go onto the stage and perform at my best. Once we finally got backstage and were watching the clock continuously ticking down, I was eventually jumping up and down with mixed feelings. When the timer finally “dinged” telling the crowd it was finally half time, I was so electrified I couldn’t believe myself.

Do What You Love Day!
By Sam Hoag and Puji Anur, Staff Writers
February 14, 2008, also known as Valentine’s Day, was Do What You Love Day at Menlo School. Each teacher chose something that they love to do, and taught it to a group of students. Some of the classes were cooking, volleyball, crosswords, Thriller dance, hula dancing and Radiohead lyrics. Those are just a few of the classes that were offered. The students had a fun time learning something interesting from the teachers that they wouldn’t have learned in normal classes. Many kids really enjoyed this. A sixth grade girl named alex took no bake desserts and said it was the best time she ever had. Other students interviewed agreed, saying it was fun and entertaining.

School Funding Upset

On March 20, one hundred cans lined the Alameda. Each can holds a student, teacher, janitor or any other unessential soul from a local school.
“If they trash the schools, the kids will be trashed too,” said Ben Holmes, 7, explaining with a first-graders lucidity, why he was standing in a gray trash can on the street. It’s hard to beat a child in a garbage can.
Educators claim they need to show their ire to the government. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s going to cut $5.5 billion dollars from school and colleges in California. The cuts would wipe out nearly 70 percent of the state’s remaining $8 billion, and diminish school’s eminency.
If approved by the Legislature, the cuts to education would mean slashing programs and firing thousands of teachers and counselors at a time when federal law demands that schools raise scores or face consequences.
Six hundred students marched out of Novato High earlier this week to protest the cuts. Hundreds of teachers held pink balloons in a raucous San Francisco rally recently to oppose pink-slip layoff warnings to more than 10,000 California teachers. And hundreds of principals and superintendents marched on Sacramento last week, warning that class size will mushroom if teachers are forced out.
“There have been close to a hundred rallies, protests and press conferences across the state - and definitely more to come,” said Robin Swanson, a public relations strategist hired by the Education Coalition, which represents the interests of educators, parents and school board members.

The Giants Pitching Staff Not so Good?
By Austin Marcus
The giants have played five games so far, as of now they are 1 and 5 which is not the start they we were looking for. They only starter who has had a decent start is Tim LIncecum and Noah Lowry is going to be out for a while due to wrist surgery
Lincecum: 5.40 era, 5 innings pitched, given up 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, and 4 strikes
Zito: 17.18 era, 7.1 innings pitches, 14 hits, 6 walks, and 0 strikeouts
Cain: 8.44 era, 5.1 innings pitched, 7 hits, 1 hr, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Lowary: 23 era, 2 1/3 innings pitched, 2 hits, 12 walks, 1hbp, and 1 strikeout.

Knight Club review
By Kate Huneke
If you went to the Knight Club, you would know that it was versatile and exciting. There were a lot of acts, but some were different and original. We had Chinese instruments, composed piano pieces, Broadway songs, and well-known songs.
Mary Anto played a Chinese zither, while her brother, Hidehiro, played the piano. Charles Lewis composed and performed an elaborate and ornate version of an original Christmas carol.
Jackie Fancher sang a fun and enjoyable song named “It’s My Dream” which was about a stuck up Broadway star. While everyone was amused by Jackie’s song, we were also mesmerized by Maddy Price’s “If I Ain’t Got You” (originally done by Alicia Keys). Maddy’s version may have been better than the original!
At intermission, the viewers socialized with each other. For the sixth grade, it was a time to hang out with people that we normally wouldn’t on the weekend. We laughed and listened to the middle school band during intermission.

Brett Favre Retires! (Finally) (Even Though I Seriously Doubt He’s Retiring For Real)
By James Huber, Senior Staff Writer
After a great and eventful 17-year career Brett Favre has decided to retire. For real this time, guys. Seriously. At least that’s what the veteran QB Favre told the media recently. Favre said in a statement. “I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired.” What a wimp in my opinion. Brett Favre is one of the toughest QBs out there and is the image of a tough guy and says he’s tired mentally?! Favre said that if he considered coming out of retirement, he would consider another season a disappointment if he didn’t win a Super Bowl. Favre is first with 442 career TD passes, 61,555 passing yards and also has the most career interception with 288. Brett Favre was an incredible QB and I really hope he leaves on a high note and retired for real this time. He ended with a great season and should just call it quits. My only remaining problem with him is how he spells his last name. Whatever, Brett Favre was one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
