Only 5 weeks ago Stanford was unranked, 6 weeks before that they lost by double digits to Siena. Who would have guessed that Stanford would have climbed the polls up to the top ten in only 5 weeks. Riding on the massive shoulders of comic book reading, Disney obsessed Lopez twins, along with some help from a much improved Mitch Johnson and Landry Fields. With good depth at most positions, they are able to get their players good rest and are able to stay competitive while the stars are on the bench. Stanford has taken down Washington State, Arizona, and many other competitive Pac-10 teams and has kept a large winning streak alive. To be #2 in the Pac-10 is an extremely good position to be in. To show how competitive the conference is, the #9 team in the Pac-10 has 6 conference wins. Stanford jumped from #22 to #13 in just one week. Stanford is able (with a combined 14 feet of man) to out rebound opponents and contest shots in the paint. After carefully watching sharp shooters like O.J. Mayo, Ryan Anderson, and Jerryd Bayless play against Stanford, I have noticed that all of them adjusted their shots to get it over the Lopez twins, within the first 10 minutes (usually after being humiliated at the hands of one of their stuffs). This makes their number of shots made and shot all together decrease. Stanford is also extremely deft at getting the loose balls and forcing turnovers. Their style of grind it out play takes its toll on opponents by the late second half, allowing Stanford to put the finishing blow on opponents. But, Stanford is looking at a date at UCLA, one of the teams able to avoid the late game slump and stay consistent and beat the Cardinal. Now Stanford looks to prepare to go into UCLA, and take on the type of team they have had past troubles putting away. A team that can score in the full court, not just the half court, and take away the Lopezs. Only time will tell where the Cardinal wil end up.

Romeo and Juliet Preview
By Marisa Ayyar
Let's talk about our new winter play, Romeo and Juliet! In this timeless love story about two soul mates, Romeo and Juliet, played by Marjory Marquardt and Andrew Sanford, both love and tragedy unfolds. Here, Marjory will tell us about the anticipated play!
Marisa: How did you feel when you got the part of Juliet?
Marjory: That was my favorite day. I was ecstatic when I heard the news. Here is the story: So, me and my friend Annie went into Mr. Mugglebee’s room, where he told us our parts. We were so flabbergasted! I came back to the quad not being able to share the news, but I knew my friends would be supportive. Although the week had been stressful, that was the best day in my Menlo career.
Marisa: How is it actually coming along?
Marjory: Its going great. I look forward to going to play practice every day. We do serious work while having loads of fun.
Marisa: Have you memorized a lot of lines?
Marjory: I’m having a little bit of trouble with that....wink wink....
Marisa: Is this going to kick off your Menlo acting stardom?
Marjory: I’m not even sure! Why don’t you see how the play goes.

Movie Review: Vantage Point
By Shane Barratt
With a Rashomon-like narrative style, the attempted assassination of the president is told from five different perspectives. Rated PG-13.
7.5/10
I gave this movie a 7.5 and it could have easily been a 10 if they weren’t so repetive with the stories. The movie would go to one of the points where it reveals a main truth than goes to the start of another perspective. You see the exact same thing from a different view than learn one thing new than it goes back to the start. I gave it a 7.5 instead of a 6 because it keeps you thinking how the plot turns out. I would call it more of a Drama/Thriller than an Action/Adventure. I would recommend this movie to all people with a taste for mystery, suspense, and action.

By Paul Wat, Staff Writer
Do what you love day is coming to Menlo School at top speed. We are all excited for Valentines Day, February 14, which will be when we will send valentines to family and friends. However, the 100th day of school is also on this day, and so, all regular classes will be canceled. In place of these classes, teachers will be teaching what they love to do. From games like Ultimate Frisbee and Volleyball to knitting and desserts, All of the students picked their favorite courses, and hope to get enrolled into one of them. Whether this event will be fun or not, we will wait nevertheless for the day to come.

The History of Valentine's Day

By Taylor Guse and Savannah McKinnon
Once there was a lovely man named St. Valentine of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. St. Valentine was a priest in the 3rd century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II outlawed any soldiers with wives and families to serve in wars, St. Valentine still performed marriages for many soldiers. He decided not to follow the Emperor’s law. The Emperor threw St. Valentine in prison, where the Saint sent his first ‘valentine’ to a young girl whom he had fallen in love with. She was the Jailer’s daughter. In his incarceration he wrote a letter to her, signing ‘from your valentine’ which is an expression still vastly used today. Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14 of February to honor the anniversary of St. Valentine’s death/burial.
Menlo Hit Hard by Winter Bug
By Lizzy Rossi, Senior Staff Writer
Recently there has been an immense amount of sickness in middle school. More than 45 kids have stayed home sick on both Monday and Tuesday. Students first started getting sick last Tuesday and throughout the week more people got infected. At the Valentines Day Dance last Friday, a majority of the 8th and 7th was exposed to it. Yesterday, the 8th grade students came to school to find that 25 of their friends were out sick. Even with the small amount of kids left, two more went home by the end of the day. Today, even more kids are missing, with a total of 50 kids sick at home. Students and some teachers are wondering if the middle school should be closed for a day to help kids get better and to prevent the spread of the virus. Having a day off would also give the growing amount of sick teachers a time to relax and stay healthy. I know that I can speak for almost all of the middle schools student body when I say that we need a day of rest to get better. We don’t need more people sick than we already do now. In a recent interview with Ms. Barada, the school nurse, she said that students that are sick are still coming to school and getting other students sick. She told me that she is really urging people to stay home if they have had any fever within the past 24 hours or any symptoms of this sickness. I have already been sick with whatever the bug is; I know that if you are sick, you really should stay home. Going through even just one day feeling feverish, tired, having a bad cough, runny nose, and a sore throat is not a good idea and can really wear you out. So do the whole middle school a favor, stay home if you are not feeling well, we don’t need more people getting sick.

The Utah Jazz
By die hard Jazz fan Sam Crowder
The Utah Jazz have been looking great this season. They started off 2 and 0 with a great win over the Golden State Warriors. With stars, Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer, the Jazz have been looking to break through the playoffs. Deron Williams played amazingly last year in the playoffs. At the beginning of this season, he only played mediocre. When he surprisingly didn’t make the All-Star team, he has had something to prove to the NBA. After the All-Stars were chosen, Deron Williams has played with an attitude getting 9 consecutive double-doubles. With Deron Williams playing like an All-Star the Jazz have been crushing teams. On Monday January 4, the Jazz beat the red hot Hornets by 22 for their ninth consecutive win. Deron Williams had 29 points and 13 assists while the hornets star point guard, Chris Paul, only had 6 points and 5 assists. The Jazz’s three point shooting was phenominal that game. Deron Williams shot 3 for 4 from behind the arc while the Jazz’s new shooting guard, Kyle Korver, shot 7 for 8 from behind the arc. With the Jazz’s young stars, they will be one of the top competitors in the NBA this year and for the next few years.
