On Monday January 28, 2008, something MAGICAL occurred; a miracle. A special visitor had come in for our assembly. Out came a man, dressed in a suit and tie, holding a bouquet of flowers. “I know a beautiful woman named Liz Cirone,” he said. This man was Ms. Cirones’ boyfriend. After dating for 1 year, they had developed an amazing relationship, and fallen in love. Mr. Bonjourne had come to propose to Ms. Cirone, so they could spend their life together. Of course, Ms. Cirone blushingly said yes. The happy couple then proceeded to have a dance in front of the school. Congratulations to the future Bonjournes!
Final Four Predictions
By Wade Avery, Senior Editor
The Final Four teams:
Memphis: Memphis has star power all over the court. They are an unbelievable team who shares the balls, shoots lights out, rebounds exceptionally, and has stunning defense. They are all incredibly smart players who can find the seems in any other teams game plan. All star freshman Derek Rose has held them strong along with help from an unstoppable supporting cast. They have only one weakness, they shoot 59% from the line.
Michigan State: Drew Nitzel is a wonderful leader, with beautiful skills when it comes to shooting and ball handling. They do a great job on defense at contesting shots and stealing the ball. They also have some very good big men under the hoop who can create open looks and rebound well. I don’t know how they can hold up to a team with stars at every position like Memphis or North Carolina.
North Carolina: This is a team who can shoot very well and plays very consistent on defense. Tyler Hansbrough one of the best players in the nation by far is an unbelievable post player. He is backed up by Wayne Ellington and Ty Lawson who provide more energy for this team. They play 40 minutes without giving up. One problem they have is in close games, they aren’t able to pull away down the stretch giving teams opportunities to stay in the game.
Kansas: They have kept it real so far. They are a team that can put up points left and right, as well as play outstanding defense. They love to push the floor and are quick and deadly. They move the ball incredibly and can own other teams defenses along with the other teams offense. A few problems they could have down the road is foul trouble with their key players, they can give up post position, but we’ll see if any of those can create problems for this team.

Movie Reviews

Juno
Juno is a comedy about an unwanted teen pregnancy in a small Midwestern town. Juno, played by Ellen Page, is the main character. She is a 16 year old junior who got impregnated by her slightly awkward cross country boyfriend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). Juno finds the perfect couple played by eager mother Jennifer Garner and chill dad Jason Bateman. Juno gets through the stress of her pregnancy with her quirky personality and support from family and friends.
Juno was pretty good and funny led by Juno’s spontaneous behavior. I liked it and it didn’t drag on too long. Kind of a chick flick, however but still a worthwhile see.
My rating = ***
Meet the Spartans
Meet the Spartans is a raunchy comedy spoof of the action movie 300. Sean Maguire plays Leonidas and leaves the Queen Carmen Elektra to lead his 13 warriors to battle against Xerxess enormous army played by the fat guy from Borat. Meet the Spartans doesn’t have much of a plot but is hilariously funny. There are a lot of scenes making fun of celebrities and TV shows like Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and American Idol. Definitely a sweet guy movie.
My rating ** and a half stars.

Dance Dance Revolution
By Sam Hoag and Puji Anur
On monday January 28th along with a proposal there was also an interesting video narrated by Mr. Silverson. The theme of the video was freaking = bad. This video featured the Menlo teachers showing alternate ways of dancing that didn’t include freaking. Some of the dances featured were: the swimmer, the lawn mower, the grocery cart, the electric slide, chill and a couple others.

The Wiki Universe
By Nick Hale
The wiki universe is a series of websites that let people tell others things. The most commonly known wiki-website is Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia that allows anyone on the website to post articles or add to them. This is the main reason that most teachers at Menlo don't let Wikipedia be used for a source in school projects. But there is a reason that Wikipedia lets anyone post and still retains some degree of accuracy. The reason is that at the end of the day, wiki has a meticulous staff that randomly checks all the articles for inaccuracies, and if something can't be ratified by two other sources, it is taken off or labeled with an inaccuracy posting and asks other viewers for a link to a website that has the same information. There is also Wikihow, which has articles made by people from making a didgeridoo to how to French kiss. Wikiversity is another sharing website where people can teach others over the Internet, and it is also very carefully searched for inaccuracies. There are several others, like Wikiafterdark (Sex ed) and Wikitimescale (history).

The New Semester
By Paul Wat & Danny Yee
The semester has changed and we are all adjusting to our new schedules and fine arts classes. Ski week is coming up soon and we are all pumped up for another week of vacation. But in the meantime, we are still waiting for our report cards and hoped we did a great job. One good thing about the semester is the upcoming Scavenger Hunt for the 6th grade and the Dance for the 7th and 8th grade. Hopefully we are enjoying our new fine arts class. For the 6th grade, its time to experience the fun of Music and Art, and for the 7th grade, its time to go through Drama and Human Skills. Nevertheless, our core classes are the same, and students are preparing for the higher homework load and the slightly harder work in class. More projects equal fun for all of us!!! The 6th grade’s first Menlo semester has ended, and now they are jumping into a new one, a new experience.

A ten year old Mexican boy loved being on break so much that on the day he was supposed to go back to school he super glued his hand to his bed to avoid it. His mom was trying to get his hand free for two hours before his mom called the authorities. The paramedics said his hand was fine and they managed to get the hand free in time for class.

Lit Tea
LIT TEA: AFTER
By Kate Huneke
After the Lit Tea on Friday, we had learned about our group’s chosen books—some about adventures, some about life changing experiences, and even some about being a clone.
In each group, there was a chaperone, which supervised and graded half of each character’s performance. Each piece was about fifteen minutes, and very interesting. The crowd listened got a preview on the book, which they might choose to read. I, personally, might read more than half of the books that were chosen.
While each person was performing, their wore a costume—we went from swim parkas to evening gowns, but each had a important meaning behind the interesting or common clothing.
Overall, the time the sixth grade had on Friday was fun and enjoyable, with a little bit of hot chocolate thrown in.

Heath Ledger Found Dead
By Kate Huneke
On January 22, 2008, Heath Ledger, famous actor and twenty eight year old Oscar nominee, was found dead in a downtown Manhattan residence.
What happened was, Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. When his maid came upstairs to tell him that the masseuse was there, he was dead.
A large crowd of paparazzi and bystanders began to gather on Tuesday evening outside the building on an upscale block in SoHo, where several police officers guarded the door.
The Aussie-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain, which was where he met Michelle Williams in 2005. The two had lived in Brooklyn together and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.
His most recent movie appearance was in “I’m Not There”, in which he played one of the many imitations of Bob Dylan, as was Cate Blanchett.
His loss was shocking to many of his thousands of fans. He was a very talented actor and gripped the audience with such that they always came back for more. Here is one comment on Heath’s death.
“RIP Heath. It is so sad that he died at such a young age. I really feel for his daughter that she has to grow up without him now. This is such a tragedy. It makes me very sad. I really loved watching him in movies. He was a brilliant actor and he will be missed...”

The YouTube Phenomenon
By Nick Hale
I think that almost every one has heard of youtube. The reason I am a youtube fan is that it is a great way to watch anything you might have missed on TV and videos created by your friends. Youtube was started by three Paypal employees in 2005 and was bought by Google just one year later, for 1.65 BILLION dollars. This just goes to show how popular youtube got, because in just one year, it got from worth almost nothing to worth more than a billion dollars. Pete Foster has to say “It rocks”. The message here is clearly, if you haven’t already gone to youtube and witnessed the magic first hand, you should go right to youtube.com and search for your favorite TV show or basketball team.

Spring Fashion
By Kate Huneke
This spring, we will be seeing an original idea for spring—floral, and bright colors. This spring, you can wear what you feel. In past years, we have seen edgy and bold but this year, we are going for soft and pretty, grasping the idea of spring.
Some of the designer’s ideas are showing us classy, fun, and preppy. From Juicy Couture we are seeing high-waist dresses, tank dresses, and ruffled chiffon-trimmed dresses.
For more casual wear, we are seeing two opposite types of jeans. The skinny is still admired, while a new-old kind of jean is back— the wide legged, high-waist, hippy jean is in, making it’s comeback from the 70’s.
As for guys, we are seeing New England meets Merry Old England with patterns that balance preppy roots with a romantic edge. From Rugby by Ralph Lauren we see bowties, blazers, scarves, rugby (the sport) uniform shirts, and striped slacks.
Over all, the girls will look elegant and classic while the guys look old fashion and proper.

BEFORE: LITERARY TEA
By Kate Huneke
Coming up on Friday, January 18, is the sixth grade’s annual Lit Tea. The eighth and seventh graders all did what the sixth graders are about to do; dress up as a character from their chosen book of which they read.
This year we have a wide range; from basketball to gossip, and queens to orphans. The book I chose to read is Behind the Mask: The Life of Queen Elizabeth I. On Friday we all will put on our costume, becoming our character. Our job was to look deeper into the character’s life and their story, and then pretend as though we were them, and tell the audience a story.

Cowboys Lose to Giants in Emotional Demise
By James Huber, Nicky Goldman & Tommy Ford
The Dallas Cowboys became the first #1 NFC seed to lose in the first round of the playoffs. Eli Manning looked more like brother Peyton and led his Giants to a 21-17 victory while Peyton Manning and last year’s Super Bowl champs Colts fell to a Chargers team without LT, Phillip Rivers and Lorenzo Neal. Eli chose not to blow the game and led a sweet scoring drive at the end of the first half to tie the game at 14 all. Tony Romo hasn’t been successful at all in the playoffs and threw a pick on 4th down while going for a game winning touchdown.
The story of the game was that Tony Romo went to Cabo with girlfriend actress Jessica Simpson during the team’s bye week instead of preparing for the game. During post game interviews, star wide receiver Terrell Owens cried behind his uber sick stunna shades while defending his QB.

Music Review: The Jonas Brothers
By Kendyl Denenberg and Ellie Still
The Jonas brothers, a teenage pop band, have continued to rock the charts at radio Disney for the past three weeks. To kick off their career they started with the song year 3000 which music video premiered on Disney channel. With their top song, S.O.S., their newest album was a very popular addition to their career. Many people also enjoy the song Hold On. They are almost done with their hot new tour with Hannah Montana, which has driven girls ages 6-17 crazy. Many girls have a teenage crush on Nick Jonas the youngest of the group (14). The three brothers Nick, Kevin, and Joe have made a big impact on Disney music. They have guest stared on Hannah Montana, which was recently number 1 on itunes. As a whole, the Jonas Brothers are a group of successful young singers that careers will only get better over the years.

2008 Presidential Campaign: So Far...
By Savannah McKinnon
A new year, the year in which our next president will be picked. I’m sure you are excited to hear about everything. But, now it is hard to tell. Republicans are complaining about Hilary Clinton, and the Democrats posted no comment. There have been many races and debates, and many a lining up to buy campaigning posters and stickers. Soon, we will be able to identify which candidates our fellow voters are rooting for (bumper stickers, posters on front lawns, etc.) This campaign is dirty and everyone running is trying their best, by using their words to lure people in. When any debates are on I advise you to watch so maybe you will know things before your friends.
My family has been taking this voting thing seriously, if some good news has come out I hear my mom yell loud and clear around the house.
