Well, the first quarter has ended, and the second has begun. There were many highlights and lowlights in the 6th grade’s very first quarter at Menlo. First, there was the retreat. Although the food was fairly bad, it was fun to some. Next, we had the activities, one of them the Balloon stacking contest, this being our first advocacy game. The lowlights were probably the increase of homework, or having to schedule their time. But, there were many good things about this, they helped us be organized and get prepared for other things. Now, after the shocks of a new school, students started to get comfortable with Menlo’s schedule, and made more friends. Now, approaching Halloween, the pumpkin décor contest, and the costume party. There were many colorful and tasteful costumes scattered across the campus, in every nook and cranny possible. Then, there comes the report card. A highlight or a lowlight, that is identified from the person’s view. And then, finally, the end of the quarter. Looking back, students realize what they just gone through, and reflect on what they want to do next quarter. Then, they sit back and relax, celebrating their quarter well done.

SPEEDO CUP 2007 REVIEW
By Kate Huneke
On November 9th, the Stanford girl’s thirteen-fourteen water polo team left for Mizzou, the college of Missouri. There the girls played four games, and lost three of them. They played Naperville (Illinois), Chicago, Annapolis (Maryland), and Commerce. We beat Annapolis, eleven to four.
Everybody played a great game, and two sixth graders (on the eighth grade team) from Menlo School got to play for a little bit.
But besides the playing, we all had three other roommates. We took lots of pictures, watched lots of TV, and did LOTS of homework (just kidding). We went to the Mizzou bookstore and bought a ton of shirts, pants, sweatshirts.

Patriots
By Alexander Carlisle
They are 10-0 and killing everybody. No one outside of new England likes them. Why? They are not playing with class and running up the score when it is not necessary. For example, they were up 35 to 7 and it was 4th down. The ball was on the Buffalo 3 and instead of kicking a field goal they went for the touchdown and scored. Remember at the beginning of the year when they found the video cameras? Most people seemed to forget that now that they are winning. They are eve talking about the “ Hoodie ”. Last year after they beat the chargers they taunted the charger’s players and stomped on the lightning bolt. I could understand running up the score in collage because the teams need to get to a bowl game. Even though they are winning every team hates them and will want to destroy them. I don’t know about you, but I am sick and tired of people saying “ this is the year of the patriots.” Maybe it looks like they will win the super bowl, but they are going to get upset in the playoffs.

Rubix Cube!
By Paul Wat and Danny Yee
Right, Left, Down, Up inversed, left inversed… Now it seems everybody around the quad is sitting somewhere watching another person taking on the Rubix Cube challenge. Everyone is begging to learn it, until finally they can achieve it. It all started at the time of retreat, when one student started to solve the Rubix Cube. Ever since then, there were many people that started to learn. I believe that the cube’s complex colored nature is why people would take n the challenge. Deep inside, they probably know that when they finish, they can pass on the experience and the algorithms to the inexperienced. “It is exiting when you learn how to solve it and fun to teach others that want to learn” says Paul Wat as he does his Rubix Cube. “It seems once they solve it, they want to let the whole world know.” Well, it seems we have gone in enough about the Rubix Cube. So, if you want to learn how to do it, find anyone who is holding a cube in their hands.

Last Day in DC
Brad's Blog Part III
Friday 11/16We started off the day with a tour of our Nation's capital. We got to stand in the Rotunda and also got to sit in the House of Rep. chamber. Our tour guide was a really nice guy but was unable to answer many of our questions. My favorite part of the building was the National Freeze inside the Rotunda. It was interesting because it told the history of the U.S. in picture.
After lunch we went into the Holocaust Museum for a few hours. We saw tons of horrifying things like pictures of the Nazis experimenting on Jews, or videos of the survivors telling their story. This museum was the most powerful thing that we've seen or done this whole trip. This museum literally made people drop to tears and put me on the verge of crying too.

Interview with historian Joe Mouton
Bus 1 has enjoyed the soothing voice of driver/history guide Joe Mouton all week. Scribbler staff writers Andrew Sanford and Kacie Madeira interviewed Joe as he took us from the Holocaust Museum to the Dinner Theater Friday.Scribbler: How long have you live in the Washington D.C. area?
Joe: Since 1968.
Scribbler: What is your favorite historical place or artifact in Washington?
Joe: The FDR Memorial is my favorite now. Before it was built, my favorite was the Lincoln Memorial.
Scribbler: What made you so intrigued to study Washington history so much?Joe: When I was in high school, I liked history. This city is an extension of American history.
Scribbler: What's your favorite Washington sports team and why?
Joe: I like the Nationals the best because they have arrived in D.C. recently even though they came from another city. They're a young team. My favorite player is Christian Guzman.
Scribbler: Have you ever met a famous person here?
Joe: Yes, I met President Clinton. When I was driving I had a run that ended at 7th Street and he came jogging by every day. One day he got on the bus to say hi. It was a funny sight, he was in his jogging clothes.
Scribbler: Who do you think serves the best meal in the city of Washington?
Joe: Sizzling Express (where we ate Monday night). Mainly because it has so many different types of food. You get a great choice.
Scribbler: Do you enjoy driving kids or adults more?Joe: Kids. I get along well with kids because I have 22 grandchildren. It's easy for me to understand kids and they understand me.
Scribbler: What do you think of Menlo students?
Joe: I think these are some of the best students in the country. I always look forward to this trip and to driving them.
Scribbler: Thank you Joe!

State Dept pics from Thurs
When we got to the State Department, both bus drivers advised us that we would not be able to take photos inside, so no one brought cameras or cell phones. It turns out this is true on all floors except the 8th floor, where we were going to get a rare tour!
After we got through security, the guide told us that we could in fact take photos but only on the 8th floor. I said to Kai that it was too bad no one had a camera and he said that he had forgotten he had his in his jacket pocket and did in fact bring it in. He let me use it during the tour and we ended up with some unique photos.
Mr. Maine asked our security guard how often school groups came through this tour and he replied "maybe once every six months." We started spreading the word about what a neat opportunity we had that day. Here are the pictures - thanks Kai for your camera!

Thursday recap & pics
We had a full day Thursday! Highlights included a quick visit to the Library of Congress, the 8th Floor of the State Dept (rarely visited by student tours), the Supreme Court (cameras not allowed in the courtroom) and the National Archives (Craig did a great job of getting photos like the one below of the signatures of many famous signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution).
Oh yeah, we also found, purchased and ate a "dinosaur donut" (see below).
More student blogs & reflections tomorrow hopefully! (And we'll add some nice pictures from the State Department when we can download them off of Kai's camera)
